Kirkintilloch High School

The new Kirkintilloch High School has been designed with a clear architectural vision, to create a building which is exciting, innovative and useable.  It explores the interesting relationships between both the social aspect and the educational aspects of everyday school life.  The positioning of the social 'hub' and teaching wings which wrap around a sheltered central courtyard creates vibrant and versatile spaces.

The new school is to be built within the grounds of the existing school site on the area currently occupied by pitches.  This will allow the existing school to remain in use until the new building is ready.  Once the school is handed over the existing school buildings will be demolished and improved sports pitches will be created in their place.

Some exciting aspects of the new school:
  • Visitors will access the new school off Waterside Road to the south west corner of the site.  This will allow the school to occupy the prominent western section of the site and become a landmark building appropriate to the school's importance within the community.
  • A sheltered courtyard provides a natural, secure extension of the internal social space, and the inclusion of a stage as a permanent landscape feature provides the opportunity for this to be used as an outdoor performance area.
  • The main pupil and public entrances are open and bright and will create a welcoming impression.  The social space stretches across to the opposite side of the school where a double height cafe leads directly out to play areas and pitches.  This dynamic and exciting space forms the heart of the school, providing pupils the opportunity to meet and relax.
  • The large flexible assembly and performance space, are separated by a stage.  Large folding partitions allow this area to be opened up to the social hub for even greater flexibility.
  • To the west of the courtyard lies the sports wing which is easily accessible from the entrance and designed to allow the sports facilities to operate independently of the rest of the school with good access to the external sports facilities.  There will be two new grass sport pitches, an all weather football/rugby pitch, an all weather hockey/tennis pitch and a new multi purpose playground with tennis markings.
  • Each classroom will contain a new teaching wall, containing interactive whiteboards along with wireless internet capabilities.
  • Breakout areas have been included in most departments which will provide opportunities for quiet study, group discussion and places to display your work.  The folding partition to these spaces allow them to either be open to the corridor or closed to create peaceful and useable environments.
  • The school will be a key community resource and careful consideration has been given to creating a building which allows access to all members of the community.
  • The new Kirkintilloch High School will be a place for learning that will inspire all who use the facilities in a secure and stimulating environment.

The tree lined avenue creates a path towards the main entrance where the glazed facade to the main pupil and visitor entrance welcome all users of the building and forms a link with the wider community.  The central courtyard creates a natural progression from the internal social space with the inclusion of a stage as a permanent landscape feature providing the opportunity for this to be used as an outdoor performance area.  To the west of the courtyard lies the sports wing which is easily accessible from the entrance and can operate independently of the school.
